Saemundur Thor Helgason is an Icelandic artist based between Reykjavik and Amsterdam. Helgason works across different mediums of culture, including film, finance, fashion and mass media. Turning the contemporary onto itself, his work aims to influence the public imagination, serving as an active agent in society. In 2025 he established ‘SB foundation’ in Amsterdam providing interest-free loans. In 2022 he completed his artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.

Cosmos Carl - Platform Parasite is an online platform that hosts nothing but links provided by the artist. Be it encrypted, inside an archive, available through open source software, live-streamed, downloadable, in a webshop, on the dark web, or on streetview, the CC work, although on public display, is directly accessible through the hyperlinks displayed on the website.

CC encourages artists to reclaim (commercial) online platforms to produce and display their art. This means that the work is displayed on a website that is neither designed nor hosted by the artist.

The fact that the work is made on an existing online platform implies that visitors may stumble upon it, not necessarily viewing it as art.

The collective is focused on the development of automated curatorial applications. The aim is to fully automate the subjective task of curating art exhibitions in order to reach a more democratic system for selecting and displaying art. 
In 2011 HARD-CORE launched the first ever curatorial robot named ASAHI. This robot curated several exhibitions in Amsterdam which were characterized by their unusual placement of artworks and new relationships between them.

Since the launch of the first version of ASAHI, HARD-CORE has participated in- and organized numerous art exhibitions in The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Switzerland and Cyberspace. HARD-CORE has taken part in lectures and panel discussions such as Impakt festival 2016 in Utrecht TEXT2SPEECH: Proxy Politics And Withdrawal at ICA London and at Studium Generale of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2017.

Since 2015, HARD-CORE is educating their own module ‘Documentation and Online Presence’ to the BA Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

The benefits of not making art

The exhibition ÁVÖXTUN % (which translates into English as “Rate of Return %”) curated by H.K. Rannversson at Reykjavik Art Museum revolves first and foremost around its economical premises, which is the artist’s fee.

Instead of using the fee to produce art, Saemundur Thor Helgason decided to invest the sum. He contacted Icelandic banks and received financial advice looking into different ways of return. He interpreted the banks’ advice and laid out their suggestions on large wall posters that were displayed at the exhibition.

To avoid the material cost of the exhibition and maximize the return of his fee, the artist sought sponsorship from ARTIS market solutions, a company specializing in printing and labelling for Icelandic businesses. In return the artist offered the company a large part of the exhibition space for their advertisements that now cover the pillars and the floor of the space.

For this reason, the exhibition is marked by the aesthetics of the market. The same goes for the exhibition’s promotional material. Videos that can be seen outside the exhibition space are inspired by advertising from financial businesses.

The videos are shot in the exhibition space starring Sigurður Àmundason, an Icelandic performance artist, dressed up in a business suite designed by JÖR. The videos function as adverts for the exhibition as well as the sponsoring companies.

The layout of the promotional material is graphically assimilated from Arionbank one of the main banks in Iceland.

In the exhibition the dream of making a living from art has been taken seriously and put in context with the marketization and individualism of today. Here, the practice of the artist is also linked to the activities of the market that aims to return the greatest profit with minimal effort. In this sense, the work can be viewed as white-collar art, referring to a comfortable job that doesn’t require manual labour – Art as business.

A spectacular, tiered, whirling display created from reclaimed wood and dazzling
circus bulbs. Wooden hands clutch shimmering star bubble bars while
flashes of animation peek through spinning zoetropes and the magical story
of LUSH is presented on bespoke illustrated TVs. More marvellous displays
spread through LUSH stores around the UK, featuring juggling hands and
bright multi coloured bulbs. Reclaimed board units showcase LUSH products
while illustrated TVs screen LUSH videos.&#38;nbsp;

Saemundur Thor Helgason’s ‘Commissioned by Lush Cosmetics’&#38;nbsp;(2016) is visible, glowing behind the window glass, from the Arebyte building yard. Wooden mannequin hands partly painted in green, magical spinning zoetropes and a set of fake cardboard TVs depicting vintage-looking footage of product promotions are neatly placed on a large metallic shelf. The installation was once exhibited by cosmetics brand LUSH at their shop in Oxford Circus and through this conscious dislocation Helgason gives visibility to the generally hidden process of making a living as an artist. Money tends to be a taboo and the way many artists survive economically remains shrouded in mystery. In response, this sort of ‘unreadymade’ has a very precise and pragmatic purpose: to minimise the labour and maximise the profit of an artist, blurring the two realms of the ‘survival side job’ and ‘artistic career’.

2015&#38;nbsp;
Saemundur Thor Helgason asked 10 companies if they would lend him audio-visual
equipment and air-conditioning units for exhibition purposes. Dialogue with marketing
divisions proved unsuccessful — companies either refused or failed to provide product
due to an internal process of unresolved decision-making.

The products brought together by Saemundur depend on each other: the Samsung TV
uses the Panasonic Sound system to play its audio and vice versa, resulting in a collaboration
between otherwise competing entities.

“I went to John Lewis and bought a Dyson AM05 Hot &#38;amp; Cool™ Nickel, Samsung UE48JU6500
Curved 4K Ultra HD Smart TV, 48 with Freeview HD, Built-In Wi-Fi and Intelligent
Navigation and a Panasonic SC-BTT505 Blu-ray Home Theater System.

The products are displayed with their packaging in it’s original condition. The cardboard
boxes are displayed underneath perspex vitrines with the products placed on top.

The Samsung 4K smart TV gathers its audiovisual material directly from a YouTube-playlist
I assembled. The playlist is compiled out of 4K landscape videos shot by Samsung
in Iceland, 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound demos, Panasonic SC-BTT505 promo and
Dyson hot + cool adverts for the UK, US and Australian market.

The work will be on display until Monday, then I will return the things back to the store.”
